[Review] YWCA Fort Canning Lodge, Singapore

This hotel is located just in front of Fort Canning Park, and behind Park Mall in the Orchard vicinity. It takes about 5-7 minutes to walk to Dhoby Gaut MRT (by shortcut through Park Mall's parking lot), which is the interchange station for 3 lines, green, purple, and yellow. And to Plaza Singapura, it takes about 10-15 minutes walk.So, it is very convenient from here to start exploring the city, as well as to go shopping :)

To go to Dhoby Gaut Station, you need to go to Park Mall's parking lot, which is located on the left side of the hotel, and find an elevator there. Go to the 1st floor, and you will come up inside Park Mall. Go out from the mall, and you will have to cross the road, and voila! The station is just in front of you! To go to Plaza Singapura, just cross the road one more time, go left and you will see the mall. On the way back, do the same, but this time, you have to go to the 4th floor using the elevator. If you are confused, ask the front office or the security guard, and they will explain it to you clearly.

We booked the Standard Twin Room through agoda.com, and we were assigned to the room in the 5th floor. The check-in staff served us politely and efficiently. The room itself is not really big, but it is more than enough for the two of us to put our 2 luggage and to wander around the room. The bathroom is not big, but efficiently designed. And I just love the water pressure, nice and strong flow of warm water!

 

The breakfast is quite good also, a mix of Asian and Western. They provide quite a lot variety of food, and they refill it every time it's almost finished. There was a chef standing by near the food, and he was very nice to help us get the food and explain it. 

The only drawback I found from this hotel was the sound of the air-con. The air-con was quite noisy and at night sometimes it produced strange noises. I found myself difficult to sleep on the first night, but for the second night, I had no problem sleeping. One more thing, they don't have free wi-fi also, but it was no problem for us because we mainly used our time to go around the city. Oh yeah, we had to pay an additional membership fee of S$3.21 when we checked out (I asked the receptionist, and he said it was a one-time payment only).

Overall, I had a pleasant stay in this hotel, and I will use this hotel again in the future. Recommended? Yes!

We have been to Singapore twice already but the first time we stayed there was in Marriott Hotel along Orchard Road. That time, I was still a travel agent so I get a lot of discounted hotel vouchers and was a part of Marriott Hotel's Specialists. Not anymore...

So, the second trip to Singapore was a little laid back in terms of budget because we had to book two double bedrooms as we are flying from Dubai to Singapore to meet my mother-in-law who was flying in from Manila with her daughter. It was a surprise birthday gift last October 2008. She thought it was a simple get-away trip given by my sis-in-law to her. Little did she know that we were already in the adjacent bedroom waiting to pounce on her. It was fun!

The YWCA Fort Canning Lodge was the hotel of our choice because of the spacious rooms with clean bathrooms and simple layout. I requested for adjacent rooms and we were gladly given two rooms right away without any fuss. Our rooms were facing the park so it was nice waking up to see beautiful "greeneries" and it was a bit quiet. Nearby too was a church and a mall. The location of the hotel was just behind the famous Orchard Road and nearby Dhoby Ghaut metro station. Going around was ver easy.

I would like to commend the friendly staff of the hotel. From the moment we checked-in until we checked-out, everyone was all smiles. They even gave my daughter free breakfast even if it was not included on the fees we paid.

The hotel's premises is very simple. Just few lounge chairs in the lobby, a grand piano in the middle, a big restaurant on the side and small shops for souvenirs and Christian items. It has a wide outdoor pool in the second floor too.

They have a wide array of continental breakfast offered. The food was rather great considering their status as an accommodation. I could not complain really. Everything was nice and cozy.

For the price of US$256.50 per room on the whole 2 nights stay is not bad because we had a good rest and relaxation time there without the noise of busy Orchard Road. My family and I will definitely stay here again on our trip back to Singapore.
